Global Entry Updates

Writer: Niki KremerNiki Kremer

For families who frequently travel internationally, Global Entry is an invaluable resource, providing a streamlined customs process upon returning to the U.S. While the application fee recently increased to $120 as of October 1, 2024, a significant change now makes it easier for families to enroll their children. Applicants under the age of 18 can now apply for free—as long as a parent or legal guardian already has Global Entry or is applying at the same time.

Despite this fee waiver, each child must still create their own account, complete an application, and undergo an in-person interview. Unlike TSA PreCheck, which allows children 12 and under to join their parents in the express lane, Global Entry requires every traveler—including infants—to have their own membership. However, given that Global Entry also includes TSA PreCheck, the process is well worth it for families who frequently travel abroad.

For those looking to secure Global Entry quickly, Enrollment on Arrival is the fastest way to complete the interview process. While most applications are approved within two weeks, some can take up to a year. Instead of waiting for an appointment at a designated enrollment center, eligible travelers can finalize their Global Entry interview immediately after landing at a U.S. airport from an international trip. This service is also available at select international locations, including Aruba, Canada, Ireland, and the UAE.

Parents applying for their children should also keep in mind that passports for those under 16 expire every five years. However, if a child’s passport expires before their Global Entry membership, the membership remains valid. The only requirement is updating the Trusted Traveler Program account with the new passport details.

Another common concern for parents is whether both need to be present at the Global Entry interview. Fortunately, only one parent is required, even in cases where the parent has a different last name than the child. It’s recommended to bring proof of residence along with the child’s required documents to ensure a smooth process.

For families who frequently travel internationally, enrolling every member in Global Entry can make customs clearance significantly faster and stress-free. And with many travel credit cards offering fee reimbursement, the investment in expedited travel has never been more accessible.

Verify your arrival airport has Enrollment on Arrival as an option.
