The United Kingdom has introduced the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system, a mandatory entry requirement for visitors from specified countries. While an ETA grants permission to travel to the UK, it does not guarantee entry; travelers must still seek permission upon arrival.
Who Needs an ETA?
As of January 8, 2025, travelers from specified non-European countries must obtain an ETA before entering the UK. However, those transiting airside and not passing through UK border control are temporarily exempt from this requirement.
Validity and Cost
An ETA is valid for two years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.
The application fee is £16 per person. (as of 1/15/25)
Permitted Activities with an ETA
With an approved ETA, visitors can:
Stay in the UK for up to six months for tourism, visiting family and friends, business, or short-term study.
Transit through the UK if passing through border control.
How to Apply for an ETA
Prepare Required Documents:
Before applying, ensure you have:
The passport you will use for travel.
A valid email address.
A credit or debit card, or access to Apple Pay or Google Pay for payment.
Submit Your Application:
The fastest way to apply is via the UK ETA app, available on the App Store and Google Play.
Alternatively, you can apply online through the official UK government website.
Processing Time:
Most applicants receive a decision within three working days, but some applications may take longer.
Important Notes
Every traveler, including children and babies, must have their own ETA.
If you obtain a new passport, you will need to apply for a new ETA.
An ETA does not guarantee entry into the UK; you must still seek permission upon arrival.
For a seamless travel experience, ensure you meet all the ETA requirements before your trip to the UK!
